A guide to help with non-legal research that covers news as well as information on companies and individuals

Introduction

Attorneys are sometimes called to look for information on clients, witnesses, opponents, or business entities, and other times they just want keep apprised of current events. This guide points out some resources and offers some basic information for managing these sorts of research tasks.

General News Sources

Regional and national newspapers are available via Lexis and Westlaw.

Lexis Advance: In the Browse Sources option, narrow to the News content type and find the newspapers you'd like to search. Alternatively, simply search for the newspaper in the left search box on the Browse Sources page.

Westlaw Next: Access the News page from the home page. From there, search or browse a variety of newspapers or other current awareness sources.

EBSCOhost has two news related databases

Newspaper Source provides access to 40 national & international newspapers, plus selective full text for 389 regional (U.S.) newspapers. In addition, full text television & radio news transcripts are also provided.

Regional Business News incorporates coverage of more than 80 regional business publications covering all metropolitan and rural areas within the United States, including Crain's Chicago Business.

Regional newspapers available online via Chicago Public Library include:

Illinois Newsstand  Articles from Illinois newspapers including the Chicago Defender, Chicago Tribune, Daily Herald (Arlington Heights), Extra, La Raza, Pantagraph (Bloomington) and State Journal Register (Springfield), plus selected coverage of other regional sources.

Legal News

American Lawyer Media publications (via Lexis) a variety of journals and magazines for legal professionals including The American Lawyer, Law Technology News and Legal Blog Watch

Chicago Daily Law Bulletin - the daily newspaper for Chicago attorneys.  Online subscriptions available for free to JMLS students.  See LawBulletin.com/students for details.

Illinois Bar Journal - monthly magazine of the Illinois State Bar Association.  Current issue available at www.isba.org/ibj.  Archived issues available via Westlaw.

Chicago Lawyer magazine - features articles about the Chicago legal community and regular columns by local attorneys

News & Articles about a Company

Articles published in business magazines and journals provide valuable insight into a company's operations, strategy and competition. In addition to general news sources consider checking these business specific resources:

Business Source Complete (available via EBSCOhost) - articles and reports from scholarly journals, trade publications, newspapers and business magazines. 

ABI/INFORM (available via Chicago Public Library) Articles from a wide range of business publications: from local business magazines to publications focusing on a specific trade or industry to scholarly journals. Over 3,000 publications are covered, including Crain's Chicago Business and the Wall Street Journal.
